How to Append Packing Weight onto Base Weight

Integrate packing weight with base weight for accurate shipping rate calculations

Table of Contents

Overview

You may want to include both the base weight of a product and its packing materials to calculate the total weight of an order at checkout 😊. To achieve this, append the packing weight to the product's base weight.

Example Use Case

Imagine you're using Custom Table Rates with these rates:

  • Shipments of 0-0.5lbs are rated at $4.95
  • Shipments of 0.5-0.75lbs are rated at $5.95

If a product weighs 0.4lbs and its box has a packing weight of 0.2lbs, ShipperHQ will combine these to a total weight of 0.6lbs. It will then match your rate for 0.5-0.75lbs and provide the $5.95 rate. This applies to live rate carriers like UPS, FedEx, and USPS as well 💡. The combined weight of items and packing materials—a total of 0.6lbs in this example—will be sent to the carrier to calculate shipping rates.

⚠️ Please note: This method does not work with weight filters configuration. It must be enabled with Dimensional Shipping.
