Return Options at Checkout

Add return shipping options with surcharges at checkout

Overview

While ShipperHQ doesn't generate or print return shipping labels, it allows you to offer return shipping options during checkout. With the Simplified Returns feature, your customers can opt to pay a surcharge at checkout to cover the costs of returns if you don't provide this service for free. Learn more about these features in the Simplified Returns section. 😊

Requirements

ShipperHQ Shipping rates display

  • A ShipperHQ account on the Advanced or Enterprise plan
  • At least one Custom Rate or Live Rate carrier configured (Note: this feature does not apply to Free Shipping and In-Store Pickup carriers)

Capabilities

  • Show customers the option to pay for shipping with or without return options
  • Control which carriers and shipping methods offer returns
  • Limit return options to specific Customer Groups

💡 Note: Return Options are not currently compatible with Rate Shopping or Method Merge Rules.

Configuring Return Options

  1. In your ShipperHQ Dashboard, click Carriers on the left-hand navbar
  2. Select a supported Live Rate or Custom Rate carrier and click the edit icon in the Actions column
  3. Click the Fees tab
  4. In the Return Shipping Options section, check the "Enable Return Shipping Option" checkbox
  5. Configure how and when your Return Options show at checkout:

    • Return Shipping Suffix: Append this text to the Shipping Method name. For example, "UPS Next Day Air® With Return Shipping"
    • Flat Rate Return Surcharge: Add an extra charge to the base shipping rate, applied after any Handling Fees or Shipping Rules
    • Select Shipping Methods: Choose which Shipping Methods offer Returns; for example, only for Expedited or Domestic methods
    • Offer Return Shipping to these Customer Groups: Restrict Return Options to certain customer groups, like Retail but not Wholesale customers

  6. Once configured, click Save

Customers will now see the option to pay for returns alongside standard shipping methods. ✅

Alternate Uses

Because both the text shown and the amount charged are configurable, these capabilities can be applied to other scenarios, such as offering a Gift Wrap option with an additional charge along with a shipping method without Gift Wrap. 🎁
