How to Split a Product into Multiple Packages

Optimize Package Splitting to Meet Carrier Weight Limits and Avoid Errors

Table of Contents

Overview

When using ShipperHQ, you can control how your products are packed and shipped. Each carrier's package settings include minimum and maximum packing weights as well as the maximum shipment weight. You have the option to split your products across multiple packages or keep them in a single package, using two key settings: "Don't Show Carrier When Product Weight > Max Package Weight" and "Allow Products to be Split Across Boxes During Packing." This guide will help you understand these settings and how they impact shipping behavior. 😊

Table

The following table explores different scenarios and outcomes based on the combinations of the two key settings. The table assumes a maximum package weight of 50 lbs, with Product 1 weighing 70 lbs and Product 2 weighing 30 lbs.

Check Product Weight:
Split Across Boxes:
Results: If Product 1 is in the cart, an error will show because it exceeds the 50 lbs max package weight. For 2 items of Product 2, ShipperHQ uses two boxes: one with 50 lbs and another with 10 lbs. The split occurs only if multiple products are below the max package weight.
Check Product Weight:
Split Across Boxes: If Product 1 is in the cart, an error will show due to exceeding the max package weight. For 2 items of Product 2, ShipperHQ uses 2 boxes, each with 30 lbs.
Check Product Weight:
Split Across Boxes: With Product 1 in the cart, ShipperHQ uses 2 boxes: one with 50 lbs and another with 20 lbs. For 2 items of Product 2, the 60 lbs is split: one box with 50 lbs and another with 10 lbs.
Check Product Weight: Product 1 results in an error as it exceeds 50 lbs and "split across boxes" is unchecked. For 2 items of Product 2, ShipperHQ packs each item separately in two 30 lbs boxes.

IMPORTANT: If you use a "pack into multiple fixed boxes" dimensional rule, the max package weight considers the boxed weight, not just the product weight, and allows rates as long as "split across boxes" is unchecked. Ensure that boxes do not exceed the max weight specified by the carrier. 💡
